Can pricey software streamline U.S. Steel?

Friday’s article (5/17/13) on the front page of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette entitled “Can pricey software streamline U.S. Steel?” talks about the challenges of successfully implementing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP); exceeding budget, takes too long, and achieving less than 50% of the benefits expected. Implementing ERP systems face the same challenges as implementing CRM; can cost big bucks, ease of use, lack of adoption, duplication of work, afraid of technology .. change. The idea of gaining efficiency by tying multiple ERP systems (purchasing, logistics, finance, HR …) together into a single system by its very nature is going to be complex. Business owners can take a lesson from their childhood in what I call Duplo vs. Lego.  Duplo blocks are the junior cousin of Lego’s. The advantage of Duplo blocks is that they are easier to handle and you can grasp how to use them day one. Once Duplo blocks have been mastered, kids then graduate and move up to their more advanced cousin, Lego’s.  Trying to start with the Lego system, with all its intricate pieces, even with a set of well written directions, is not easy and can take a while to master. When seeking ways to make your business more productive through ERP or CRM software solutions, there’s a much higher rate of success when the process starts with Duplo’s vs. Lego’s.  Happy building.
