KISS for 2015
KISS – Keeping it Simple Stupid is a phrase often cited by business leaders, however it’s harder to act on than most realize. What does KISS mean to you? Start by making a list of business activities that you’re looking to simplify – emails, text messages, app alerts, to do lists, project action items, customer information, status reports … the list for most is quite long and at times daunting.
So where to start? Here’s a refreshing idea … take yourself out to a coffee shop, treat yourself to your favorite beverage and bring along a note pad/writing utensil to make a list. Reflect for 20 minutes on how you manage your day. Who are you contacting? What are you keeping track of? When do you need to access your stuff? How do you like to access your information (phone, pc, tablet)? Where is your information stored (on your pc, in the cloud, server)? Why are certain things more important than others? In a sense the 5 W’s of your day to day activities.
Once you’ve identified the pieces you wish to track, you’ll need a system to manage your information. The choices of systems can be overwhelming. Some products allow you just to take notes. Some are only available in the Cloud. Others cost thousands of dollars a year in subscription fees. Be careful you don’t over invest. Look for a system you can trial and get a sense of before you make a fuller investment.
One final thought. Lack of adoption is a serious risk. Find a system or product that makes sense to you, your colleagues and is easy to use. For a free trial of a productivity tool we use to manage our projects and prospects, click here. Remember to KISS; you’ll be happy you did.
