When Simplicity Is the Solution … facing a crisis of complexity.
The Wall Street Journal article, dated Saturday 3/30/12, entitled “When Simplicity Is the Solution” was one of the most insightful articles I have read in a long time raising the issue of complexity in today’s world and it’s negative impact on productivity. The article reminded me of the old story of 2 kiosk vendors, both selling perfume, operating at two different ends of an indoor mall. One vendor offered 27 varieties and the other 6. Who consistently sold more product week in and week out? The vendor offering just 6 varieties. Why? Too many choices for the consumer. As this WSJ article points out “complexity is the coward’s way out” and “there is nothing simple about simplicity”. The three major “simplification” principles cited by the article are: 1) empathizing (by perceiving other’s needs and expectations), 2) distilling (by reducing to it’s essence the substance of one’s offer) and 3) clarifying (by making the offering easier to understand or use). This is the goal of the W5Templates suite of products; simplify to get more done.
